Applying Biomimicry to Cities: The Forest as Model for Urban Planning and Design

International audience; The idea of applying biomimicry to cities is attracting increasing attention as a way of achieving sustainability. Undoubtedly the most frequently evoked natural model in this context is the forest, though it has not yet been investigated with any great scientific rigour. To overcome this lacuna, we provide: first, a justification of the model of the forest via what we call the arguments from “fittingness”, “scale”, and “complexity”; second, an exploration of various key innovations made possible by this model in the fields of urban planning, urban water systems, urban energy and transport systems, and urban food and nutrient systems.

Is laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia a reliable prognostic factor? French national cohort study.

International audience; Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess whether the laterality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) was a prognostic factor for neonatal survival.Methods : This was a cohort study using the French national database of the Reference Center for Diaphragmatic Hernias. The principal endpoint was survival after hospitalization in intensive care.We made a comparative study between right CDH and left CDH by univariate and multivariate analysis. Terminations and stillbirths were excluded from analyses of neonatal outcomes.Results: A total of 506 CDH were included with 67 (13%) right CDH and 439 left CDH (87%). With this contribution we would like offer a first and brief approximation about the Hispanic Coin Hoards, roughly dated between the reigns of Augustus and the end of the Tetrarchy. We will focus solely on the imperial hoards found in the Iberian Peninsula. In a chained, diachronic and casuistic way, we offer an analysis according to a series of variables: historical events, archaeological context, pattern of hoarding and functionality. Beside the four portrait heads from Syracuse, Centuripe, Tyndaris, Taormina, several sculptural, epigraphic and numismatic testimonia are considered from the above-quoted cities and other Sicilian sites.
